Impact of PS VITA SliM
The outlook for
current laptops is complicated, at the time the DS and PSP were released, cell
phones could barely move a few gray pixels on the screen and therefore could
not compete at the gaming level. Today smartphones and tablets dominate the
market and capture the attention of casual gamers and those who have little
time to play or like to play on their travels, and in that market the Vita
seems to be a bit lost and Sony does not seem to know how to where to aim.
As a gaming
device it is really impressive, but all the rest of its features can be found
effortlessly and even better implemented (like the browser) on any cell phone.
And that is where the user must ask himself if he wants to play games with
greater depth of gameplay than Angry Birds, and also pay for them prices that
are around 50 dollars (in the United States of course, in Argentina they are
much more expensive).
The user must
also ask himself if he is willing to pay for those games that for the same
price he can find on his home console, which can be played on a large screen
with more comfort.
It is difficult
to predict the future but given the advancement of smartphones I believe that
portable consoles are going to become a niche product, reserved for collectors
and for the most rabid gamers like me who do not want to miss any games and who
continue to prefer to use more buttons and sticks instead of virtual joysticks,
that we like games that can last more than 10 hours and that require a lot of
dedication, or that we like to face the shots against 16 other strangers
throughout the night.
If you are one of the latter, I can say that
yes, buy the PS Vita but wait for the inevitable price reduction that will
surely suffer in a few months, since for the current price and the amount of
software available I consider it to be An excess.
However, I think
that if Sony helps developers to implement what I call the "Nintendo
philosophy", that is, to make specific games for Vita that make the most
of it and that can only be played on it and that are also addictive, deep and
fun, I'm almost sure the most demanding gamers will pay more attention than
they have today. Those who are not willing to pay for a laptop that is more
expensive than the PS3, plus the high costs of the cartridges and settle for
the free or $ 1 games, keep going, the Vita is not for you.
